Choosing a web host

Before you start being your own webmaster, you need to decide how to publish your site on the internet.
When choosing a web hosting company, there are many options you need to consider - after all, if you make money online and your site goes down, you are without any income.

Before looking you should write down what you require from a web host and from what budget. This should include and shoftware you need (php, mysql, etc) as well as any features of the software. If you use 3rd party programs, you should check their limitations also.
You may want to present this list to any potential web hosts first and determine if they are suitable from their response, and the time it took them to reply.

After determining this, you should search for up to 5 web hosts you see that fits your needs. You can do this in any search engine, like google etc. You need a selection as you cannot guarantee the first find will be suitable.

Next, be sure to find reviews, or comments from them as well - if they have their own forums be sure to check here for unhappy customers. You should look at the number, and not individual customers as some criticism if often poorly attributed.
You should try and discount 2 of your hosts from the lists by reviews and reseach.

When you are down to 3 prosective hosts, compare their prices and the service they are offering, along with server specification, and other free services they may offer to their customers.

Finally, there are 2 different hosting types to consider. If you are serious about hosting you should not choose any free hosting, as the resources are low, and you are often forced adverts on the site.

Shared Hosting

Shared hosting is usually a mass-market product, where users sign up to a web host. Although each user has individual files on the server, the overall configuration, space and resources are shared.
This is the cheapest option available usually, so it does have benefits. However, some features are usually disabled so you cant use them. You should make a list of any options you need first and consult
the hosting company before signing up.

Server Hosting (or VPS hosting)

Although this option is more expensive that traditional hosting, you are in complete control of the server - any options you need can be setup by yourself (or the hosting company on your behalf).
You should check if backups are offered, or if its easy for you to take backups. Technical support is usually better, buy this is because the costs are higher on a dedicated server.
